You are faced with these problems:

Your roof leaks during a spell of milder weather
Condensation
Mist in your windows
Ice on the roof ledge
Leaks through the ceiling
Frost in the attic
Excessive heat in the house during summer
Premature wear of shingle

The J.M.Simard Solution

Ventilating the attic will prevent problems of condensation, of mold and rot and of discomfort.

During winter, heat from inside the house tries to come out through the attic and accumulates there if it is not well ventilated. This accumulation of heat causes humidity which comes into contact with the cold roof, resulting in condensation which then transforms into frost (Photo 1). With outside temperatures rising, the attic warms up and frost melts back into water which gets absorbed by the glass fiber isolation and truss. This of course causes mold, rot and paint damage.

This heat build-up in the attic melts the snow accumulated on the roof, causing the water to flow toward the end of the roof's slope. This water, when in contact with the cold parts of the roof above the cornices, freezes and forms an ice barier (Photo 3), keeping further water from leaking off the roof. Water then penetrates under the shingle and eventually right into the house.

During summer, the attic gets very warm. If the air is not renewed (Photo 2), the shingle ends up being constantly over-heated, making it age prematurely. This heat also causes discomfort in the house, which results in air conditionner working harder and longer. However, when atttic ventilation is done adequately, the air in the attic is renewed and changed three times per hour, which brings comfort in the house and avoids overheating of the shingle.

A well done attic ventilation then becomes the appropriate solution to eliminate condensation, humidity and to avoid problems mentionned above as well as improve your quality of life within your home.
